STONY BROOK, N.Y., November 16, 2018 Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism will be the new host site of a major awards program honoring outstanding work by Long Island high school students in broadcast journalism and video feature production.

Over the past two years, up to 200 students and educators have gathered annually at Southold School District on the North Fork of Long Island, which founded the celebration of student broadcast journalism known as BASH – Broadcast Awards for Senior High.

“We are delighted that Stony Brook University will serve as the venue for BASH, as this will clearly provide attendees with a high quality experience,” said Southold and Greenport Schools Superintendent David Gamberg, whose district will continue to co-sponsor the program.

The 2019 event will be held on Friday, May 3 and will be generously sponsored, in part, by Newsday.

Newsday is thrilled to play a role in honoring this talented group of aspiring broadcast journalists,” said Debby Krenek, Newsday publisher.

In addition, Gamberg said the new location – conveniently located at a mid-way point between New York City and the East End of Long Island – would allow additional students and teachers to participate. It is expected that close to 300 participants from 20-25 individual school districts will attend.

“We believe bringing this event to Stony Brook will raise its visibility and allow us to leverage the expertise and involvement of our journalism faculty and our campus resources,” said Howard Schneider, Dean of the School of Journalism.  “And we’re thrilled to help celebrate and inspire the next generation of journalists and creative storytellers.”

The event, which is attended by students and teachers from Nassau and Suffolk Counties, is part awards ceremony and part hands-on workshops where television executives, national television news correspondents and others in the media industry engage with students and teachers to deepen their understanding about creating and producing professional caliber videos ranging from news reports to entertainment features.

Awards, which are judged by media industry professionals, are presented in categories such as “Best Anchor Team,” “Best Sports Package” and “Best Broadcast. More information will soon be available at www.stonybrook.edu/journalism and at www.sohotvnews.com.
