Graduate student Dipti Kumar wins SAJA award

Graduate student Dipti Kumar won the award for “outstanding story on any subject by a South Asian student in the United States” at the 2013 South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) Awards.

Kumar won for her story on the future of girls’ education in Turkana, Kenya, which she reported while on the School of Journalism’s January 2013 Journalism Without Walls trip.

The award also recognized a video about a Turkana school principal, Edward Ekuom, which Kumar made with then-senior Frank Posillico, who graduated from the School of Journalism in May 2013.

The award ceremony took place on Oct. 5, 2013 and Emmy Award winning journalist Soledad O’Brien was the keynote speaker for the event.

Congratulations, Dipti!
