In a celebration of the life of Lee Lutz, the late editor of the The Village Times Herald, The School of Journalism along with the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook hosted “A Taste of Three Villages” where they raised about $10,000 for a scholarship in his name.
The tasting, which took over the back lawn on the Holiday Inn on Thursday, attracted about 300 people who were able to taste samples from more than 50 restaurants form the Three Village area.
“A lot of hard work went into it,” said Gino Veneroso, the sales manager for the Holiday Inn Express. “All these walk-ins and sponsorships came in and a lot of people who couldn’t make it sent in donations.”
The scholarship will be given to one student from Stony Brook University each year to intern at the Times Beacon Record Newspapers.
This year’s recipient of the scholarship is recent graduate Brittany Wait.
Lutz’ wife, Francesca Lutz, hopes that the scholarship will help students achieve their dream in journalism, but above all she hopes they will have an impact on the world.
“He would be slightly embarrassed over the number of people that responded but I think he would be honored,” said Lutz who said she saw the night as a celebration of her husband’s life and what he loved. “It was just magical, the only way I can think to describe it was a magical event.”
