In less than a month, two Stony Brook University senior journalism students will make the trek to the University of Arizona for The New York Times Student Journalism Institute.
Carol Moran and Jenny Zou are two members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists who were accepted to the prestigious program in Tucson, Arizona. While most of their fellow students spend winter break relaxing, they will be working with reporters and editors from The New York TImes, The Boston Globe and regional newspapers of the Times Company to improve their journalism skills.
“I hope that the work I produce there is something I can be really proud of and is better than anything I’ve done before,” said Moran.
While Moran was accepted into their reporting program and Zou was put in their video
reporting program, they must both come prepared with story ideas. And if they produce work during the institute that the editors deem exemplary, it could be picked to be put in a publication.
In addition to the program’s focus on improving reporting skills, it will also give them a chance to make connections with world class editors and reporters, as well as other budding student journalists.
“It will be a great opportunity to meet other students and make friends with other journalists from around the country,” said Moran.
