SOJ faculty member Carl Safina wins award

Carl SafinaCarl Safina, visiting professor at the School of Journalism and co-chair of the Center for Communicating Science, has won the 2012 Orion Book Award for his book The View from Lazy Point: A Natural Year In An Unnatural World.

The Orion Book Award is awarded yearly to a book that “addresses the human relationship with the natural world in a fresh, thought-provoking, and engaging manner,” according to the award’s web page on Orion Magazine.

The View from Lazy Point: A Natural Year In An Unnatural World is Safina’s record on his time at Lazy Point, a small community miles away from the Eastern tip of Long Island. Despite the name, Safina calls it “a place of real power” and a “cauldron of vitality.”
