After missing a phone call from what she later learned was an automated voicemail system at The New York Times, Stony Brook journalism major Ariam Frezghi unofficially got the news that she had been accepted into the program that would revive her faith in journalism.
“I had some challenges this semester, so I’m thankful for this opportunity,” Frezghi, a junior, said. Frezghi is heading to New Orleans, home of crawfish gumbo and po’ boys, for The New York Times Student Journalism Institute NOLA12, May 13-28, for student members of the National Association of Black Journalists. While other students are celebrating the end of finals, Frezghi will be working with reporters and photographers from The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and the city’s regional paper, The Times-Picayune, and its website, NOLA.com.
“I know it’s going to be a lot of work trying to meet deadlines, but I’m looking forward to it,” she said. ”I just want to soak up as much as I can.”
