Grad update: Samantha Olson

I hope all is well! I wanted to catch you up on all I’ve experienced since graduation.

I’ve been a staff reporter at Medical Daily (vertical of International Business Times) for a year now. In the months past, I’ve interviewed fascinating doctors, scientists, and even some celebrities (Kim Cattrall, Nick Cannon, Star Jones, Carla Hall, and Brenda Strong). I feel very fortunate to have had such a wonderful experience at my first job after graduating Stony Brook.

I’ve also been published in Newsweek and am currently working on two more long form pieces:

Magnetic Bacteria Could Help Destroy Tumors and Fight Cancer

Bringing Virtual Anatomy to the Operating Room

Last week I was selected as one of 30 fellows for the Precision Medicine Fellowship Program at Mayo Clinic. Next month I’ll be traveling to Minnesota to learn about the human genome project, explore their on-site biobank, and meet leading scientists and doctors to discuss personalized medicine and epigenetics. To say I’m excited is an understatement.

I wanted to send this note to thank you and all the program set me up for. The class lessons and professors were invaluable in the process to adequately prepare me for “the real world.” I find myself using the methods, skills, and tips I learned at journalism school on a daily basis.

Thank you again. I appreciate all you’ve done. Keep in touch.
