Press Club of Long Island honors SOJ students

pcli-awards-1200Woodbury – June 3 – Stony Brook University School of Journalism students won eight first- and second-place awards last night at the annual dinner of the Press Club of Long Island.

“From our hall of fame inductions to giving out prestigious awards to deserving professionals and students, this is the highlight of our year, and we congratulate all the winners,” said PCLI President Chris R. Vaccaro. “We hope that the awards competition helps to make the journalism on Long Island even stronger.”

The press club also inducted Marie Colvin into its Hall of Fame. Colvin, an acclaimed war correspondent and Long Island native, was killed in 2012 while reporting in Syria. Colvin’s 30-year career took her to conflict zones around the globe, including Iraq, Libya, Zimbabwe, Chechnya and Kosovo. In her honor, the School of Journalism established the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting. Her sister Cathleen, who is a member of the Colvin center’s board of directors, accepted the Hall of Fame award.

“We’re very proud of our students and their fine work,” School of Journalism Dean Howard Schneider said after the ceremony.  “The work is indicative of the outstanding journalism that they do both for campus media and the school’s own weekly broadcasts.”
