The Lee Lutz Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a School of Journalism graduating senior who has an excellent academic record; skills in writing, reporting and multimedia, and a strong commitment to a career in journalism.

The $4,000 scholarship is paired with a summer internship with the Times Beacon Record Newspapers. After students apply for this scholarship, a committee of faculty members from the School of Journalism will make recommendations to the Times Beacon Record Newspapers, which will select the winner.

The scholarship was established by John Tsunis, chairman of the board of Gold Coast Bank and past president of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce, in memory of Long Island newspaper editor Lee Lutz. Lutz became editor of The Village Times Herald in March, 2006, and soon after became executive editor of the seven Times Beacon Record newspapers. He filled these dual roles until shortly before his death from cancer in 2011. Lutz wrote his own obituary, about his love for his family and his varied life of public engagement. It can be read here.
